Hanging Temple

πŸ“ Introduction

The Hanging Temple is located on the cliff of Cuiping Peak in Jinlong Gorge of Mount Heng, Hunyuan County, Datong City. It is China's only surviving temple that combines Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. The entire temple complex hangs about 50 meters above the ground on sheer cliff walls. The temple features 40 halls and pavilions, using ingenious engineering with half-inserted flying beams as foundations, cleverly supported by hidden rock anchors.

πŸ“š Historical Background

The Hanging Temple was first built in 491 AD during the Northern Wei Dynasty, giving it over 1,500 years of history. Legend says it was built by the Taoist master Kou Qianzhi to 'escape the mundane world'. It has been repaired throughout the dynasties, with most existing structures dating from Ming and Qing renovations.
